Internet Speed in Japan: What Nomads Need to Know

Mike T.Published: Last reviewed: 2 min read

Fast internet is non-negotiable for remote work. Japan generally has excellent fiber coverage (Hikari), but speeds can vary dramatically by building age and connection type.

Fiber optic cables with blue light

The Gold Standard: Nuro or Au Hikari

If a building has Nuro Hikari, you are golden. This is Japan's fastest residential internet service.

  • Download: Up to 2Gbps
  • Upload: Up to 1Gbps
  • Latency: 3-10ms to Tokyo servers

High speed network equipment

Other reliable options include:

  • Au Hikari: 1Gbps, very stable
  • Flets Hikari: NTT's standard fiber, 1Gbps
  • SoftBank Hikari: 1Gbps, often bundled with mobile

The Trap: VDSL Connections

Old apartment building in Tokyo

Warning: Older buildings (pre-2005) often use VDSL for the "last mile" connection to your room. This technology runs over phone lines and has serious limitations:

  • Maximum speed: 100Mbps (theoretical)
  • Real-world evening speeds: Often drops to 5-20Mbps
  • Latency spikes: Common during peak hours (7-11 PM)

This is a deal-breaker for video calls, streaming, or any bandwidth-intensive work.

Our Promise: All listings on NomadJapan are verified to have true Fiber connections, not VDSL. We test speeds at peak hours to ensure reliability.

Mobile Options: Pocket Wi-Fi vs SIM

Person using smartphone

For backup connectivity or while apartment hunting:

Pocket Wi-Fi

  • Pros: Easy rental, no contracts
  • Cons: Battery life issues, higher latency (50-100ms)
  • Best for: Temporary backup only

Physical SIM Card

  • Pros: Native speeds, reliable
  • Cons: Requires resident card for voice number
  • Best for: Long-term residents
  • Providers: Holafly, Airalo, Ubigi
  • Pros: Instant activation, data-only is fine for most
  • Cons: No voice number
  • Best for: First 1-2 weeks while settling in

Speed Testing Your Accommodation

Before committing to any rental, ask these questions:

  1. What is the connection type? (Fiber to the room, or VDSL?)
  2. What ISP is available? (Nuro > Au Hikari > Others)
  3. Can you provide a speed test screenshot? (Preferably from Speedtest.net during evening hours)

At NomadJapan, we handle all of this verification for you. Every listing includes real speed test results from multiple times of day.
